GeekGirlCon Act of Whimsy: Silly Hat
Aug. 30th, 2015 02:50 pmI promised that if we reached $3000 in donations before my summer quarter final exam, I would wear a silly hat to it. Which we did, with a couple days to spare, so I did.

My students were very indulgent when I asked them to wave before taking their exam.

I continued to wear the Queen of Hearts ears all the way through the laboratory practical exam they had after the written one. Somehow, Disney Villain mouse ears seemed like the right combination of silly and wicked for a final exam day.

Costume designs for Dr. Mary
Feb. 28th, 2014 09:53 pmI did a thing, inspired by
quadrivium's song "Scattering Seeds on the Pomegranate Tour" also known as "Peppermint Ladies". If you haven't heard this one live, fix that the next time she's in concert. It features a number of Greek and Norse goddesses on tour as a band and support staff. Being the costumer I am, I was immediately inspired to design outfits for all of the ladies and cast an entire stage-full.
( mmm, mmm, peppermint ladies )

Shadow Unit == made of Win.
Feb. 7th, 2011 12:13 amIf you are not currently reading Shadow Unit, you should be. It is this beautifully painful series about an FBI behavioral analysis unit dealing with an anomalous force that makes people superhuman serial killers.
In the latest episode, they go to Seattle. And at the very end, two of our heroes go to the Night Kitchen for cheese curds and escapism. The Mad Gastronomer shows them her restaurant. And they get to push the Button.
gfish's Jacob's Ladder made it into the story. For Reals.
Here is the link: http://www.shadowunit.org/ligature.html. Bounce down to Act V if you just want to read about the restaurant and the Button.
This episode also pokes fun at Aladdin Sane-era Bowie. <3

Steampunk Jewelry For Sale!!
Jan. 2nd, 2010 03:36 pmMy mother has opened an Etsy shop for her steampunk jewelry.
http://steampunkartyst.etsy.com
If you've seen my corduroy traveler's skirt, with the map insets and the dangly chains, or the earrings and pins I wear with it, you've seen her work. Unlike a lot of sellers, she takes watches apart down to the gears and base plates before reassembling them. I've never seen anyone with a design aesthetic quite like hers. She wires the bits together, which means they are sturdier than if glued and that they retain freedom of motion. (The gears spin, dude.) There are a few pictures of my personal collection underneath the cut.
If you or anyone you know wants some very distinctive steampunky accessories, please check her stuff out. I love it to pieces.
( pretty shinies! These ones not for sale. )

Wireless Internet?
Jul. 7th, 2009 12:45 pmLast call: does anyone want 18 months of Clearwire internet? You'd get the first month free, after that $35 including the modem. I've been perfectly happy with them, but
tfabris wants to kill zombies online and won't use it.

On the other side of dreams
Feb. 24th, 2009 03:58 pmGo ye forth and acquire Palimpsest.
It is Catherynne M. Valente's latest novel, and it is beautiful and sexy and wild and amazing. I know, for I have read it.
Vixy's copy is the first one the University Bookstore sold (Duane handed it to me off the cart) but it surely won't be the last.
For more sex and dreams and maps, watch for the S. J. Tucker/Catherynne Valente tour extravanganza, coming to all kinds of cities as well as to Norwescon. That one has special Kitten Sundae deliciousness included.
Right, Sooj has done another companion album. It is all over hawtness.
There is perfume, clothing, jewelery, and much more to be found.

"Are we figments of our gin? Are we long-lost orphaned kin?
Or the mad descendants of a writer's pen?
No one's sane behind their mask. Ask what you really want to ask."
And I close my eyes and whisper, "Can you take me back again?"
Save me, save me, I've lost my memory
I'm outside the world looking in
Save me, save me, I'm lost in the memory
And I'd swear I'm a place that's never been...

I wore my glasses to work today, which is a pretty rare occurrence, and noted that my new prescription is exceptionally strong. Such that, if I turn my head just right, and look out of the very edge of my left lens, I see a yellow and a red-orange band at the leading edge of objects, and an aqua and a purple band at the trailing edge. That lens is at a -11 diopter; I've heard that -10 is legally blind.
